On the 16th of February, 1923, so 92 years ago was uncovered one of the most unique archaeological finds in existence. And they have the pictures to prove it.
On most of the photos you can see two of the most important people intertwined in this one-of-a-kind discovery – the British Egyptologist Howard Carter (guy with the mustache) and his employer, Lord Carnarvon (another guy with the mustache). Hmm….the brackets ain’t helping, are they?
Ok, Howard Carter is the guy with the mustache AND a shovel in his hand..since saying that he is the one with the white shirt and black pants would get us exactly where we started.
Interestingly enough, Lord Carnarvon died not even 2 month after these pictures were taken, on the 5th of April 1923.
Also the stairs, and the Antechamber were discovered already a month before, the 16th February was the date where the actual Burial Chamber was opened. If you would think, that this was the culmination of all the works, you couldn’t be more mistaken, since the works continued up to the November 10, 1930, eight years after the discovery, where the last artifacts were removed from the tomb.
And since people love to read dates, here are some more of those, just to get the picture, how much time it takes:
February 12, 1924 – the granit lid of the sarcophagus was raised
October 13, 1925 – the cover of the first sarcophagus was removed
October 23, 1925 – the cover of the second sarcophagus was removed
October 28, 1925 – the cover of the third sarcophagus was removed, and the mummy was uncovered
November 11, 1925 – the examination of the remains of Tutankhamun started
October 24, 1926 – the works on the treasury started
